Idlewyld Inn Wedding

Lara + Neil
{Idlewyld Inn Wedding Photography}

Perhaps one of the sweetest weddings we've had the pleasure of photographing - small in numbers, big in LOVE. Lara & Neil shared their vows in an intimate ceremony with just their immediate families on a weekday in September (more weekday weddings please!). I have photographed many of Lara's friend's weddings and it was so exciting that it was finally her turn! We were sad that we couldn't make it to their Toronto reception, but small world that it is, found out one of our photographer friends was attending and got him to set up a sneaky surprise (photos from this wedding day framed at their reception) a few days later! Congrats Lara & Neil, we will always remember your sweet wedding day and how lucky we were to be a part of it!

Describe the vision/theme you had for your wedding in 5 words or less: Relaxed weekday garden wedding.

What are you favorite memories of your wedding day?
Bride: Having a relaxed breakfast at the Idlewyld together on our wedding day. How much my heart was pounding before seeing Neil in his wedding attire for the first time. Taking a moment by ourselves in the Civic Gardens after the ceremony and before we drove back to the Idlewyld for dinner.
Groom: The beautiful, sunny day. Killing time and eating room service before the big moment. When my family arrived and we put on our flowers. Debating whether to scare Lara during our first look. Choosing not to (at the last minute) and just soaking in her beautiful dress! The look of forgiveness in Lara's eyes when we realized I forgot the marriage license at the hotel! The beautiful small ceremony. Driving away with beer cans on the car. My first dinner as a married man at the Idlewyld.

Best wedding related decision:
Bride: Getting married on a Thursday! Having two wedding events (the Thursday legal ceremony and a party with our friends and family in Toronto on Saturday) allowed us to spread out the festivities and celebrate our marriage the way we wanted to.
Groom: Overall, asking Lara to marry me was a pretty great decision. On the day, wearing funky socks, I guess.

Favourite detail:
Bride: My dress was made by my Gramma. It was originally my Mum's wedding dress in the 1970s (and had large cape-like sleeves and a bigger skirt) and I had it altered to update it. My Gramma passed away last year, so it was significant to wear something she had put love and energy into.
Groom: The park / gazebo turned out to be a perfect place to get married. We loved that some older folks sat and watched from a bench and we felt lucky to have such a beautiful day.

Advice for future brides & grooms:
Bride: Make decisions that are meaningful to you instead of the way it's "supposed" to be.
Groom: I second Lara here. Tradition shmadition. Do what feels like 'you' and you can't go wrong.

Would you change anything if you could do it all over again:
Bride: I would eat less at dinner so I could have more room for champagne after our families went home.
Groom: not a thing.

Best surprise of the day:
Bride: The flowers! They were more wonderful than I had imagined. I had loved the idea of having anemones but our florist Tania told me she didn't know if she would be able to get them. Then on the day she surprised us with Neil's anemone bout, and there were some in my bouquet as well. And my flower crown was a last minute-ish decision which Tania whipped up and it was so perfect. She is such a talent.
Groom: I wasn't nervous. It was peaceful and happy, through and through.

Laura + William
{London Ontario Bellamere Winery Wedding Photography}

I love these two! Laura & William are such a fun loving quirky couple and their day was full of little personal touches that brought that out! Will gave by far one of the best speeches I've ever heard! And Laura changing into a white jumpsuit for her first dance (and then staying in it for the rest of the night) was brilliant! Comfort and style! Thanks to this wonderful couple for having me capture their wedding day!

Describe the vision/theme you had for your wedding in 5 words or less: Old Fashioned and Timeless Romance.

What are you favorite memories of your wedding day?
Bride: Grade 8 slow dancing to K-Ci & Jojo with my husband near the end of the night
Groom: The speeches that Laura & I made for each other. My speech was about Penguins and she surprised me by talking about Pelicans.

Best wedding related decision: Investing in GOOD photography-- the day goes by in a flash and it's something we want to remember forever.

Favourite detail: Wearing my grandmother's hat for the ceremony. It gave the bridal attire a timeless look, and was the best way to honour her.

Advice for future brides & grooms: Make time in the day to go around and talk to your guests. We took every opportunity we could to really enjoy our friends and family. You will regret later on reading wedding cards and realizing you didn't get a chance to say hello and thank them for coming in person!

Would you change anything if you could do it all over again? Get a wedding planner! As a Bride, whether you are a Project Manager or not, you want to enjoy your engagement-- not be running a second job smile

Best surprise of the day: The weather was terrible, in the most perfect way. It rained and stayed dry, EXACTLY when we needed it to. HRM stands for Heather's rain miracles.

Anything else you'd like to add: The day is about you, but also not about you =) As much as you may want to sit and decompress at some points in the day (especially introverts), keep going! Take advantage of your surroundings and take everything in.

Linda + Jamie
{Idylwyld Inn Wedding Photography}

Linda & Jamie had a lovely intimate wedding with their closest friends and family at the beautiful Idylwyld Inn. They both braved the cold to get some awesome shots outside!  The dinner room was set up so beautifully and had many personal touches made by the couple themselves and their loved ones! Linda, being the creative person she is made her own wedding cake and also with the help of her mother & grandmother made her bouquet!

Describe the vision/theme you had for your wedding in 5 words or less: Cozy, intimate, relaxed, romantic, vintage

What are you favorite memories of your wedding day?
Bride: The ceremony itself was very memorable to me. We hand picked all of the content to be very meaningful to us, so it was an extremely sentimental ceremony for me. I loved having time to talk with all of our friends and family, and I had an absolutely amazing time sharing stories and a ton of laughs with our guests!

Groom: Obviously it was seeing my beautiful bride as she entered into the room for the first time, and having our closest family and friends present to witness the event,  but I was also very fond of the venue.  It was a very cozy, intimate, and classy Victorian Inn.  The food was great and our guests absolutely loved every bit of it.  Having everyone stay overnight at the Inn, followed up by a private brunch on the Sunday morning was a nice segue to ending the weekend.

Best wedding related decision:
Bride: Picking each other!! Also keeping it small and within budget, and doing things ourselves to give it a personal feel.
Groom: Everything that was handmade added a very personal warmth:  the wine, wedding cake, invites, programs, wedding songs, table runner, flowers/decorations, and of course the wedding dress and groom’s suit were also custom tailored.

Favourite detail:
Bride: The personal touches to the wedding. Every detail from the invites, to the music, favors and decor, to the attire was somehow created or enhanced with the amazing help of our family and friends.
Groom: Each personal touch somehow held a sentimental value or relevance that reflected the bride and grooms passions towards life and love for the guests.

Advice for future brides & grooms:
Bride: Keep the day about you and your spouse-to-be.  There is so much pressure these days to have over-the-top, showy weddings, but so often you hear people say that it just went by in a daze, and they barely had time to enjoy the day, or that they or their families will be paying off debt for ages. Don’t let the day take over the true meaning of the day. It is just one day in the rest of your lives together!!!
Groom: Most couples nowadays seem to try and outdo the wedding before them.  This could very well be the worst fallacy for brides and grooms.  We recognized this, and for us, it was not difficult to ‘unplug’ from this mindset and go in a direction where our hearts and imaginations led us.

Would you change anything if you could do it all over again?
Bride: Nothing! We had the most fabulous day! It was perfection!
Groom: (Other than extend the hours for the open bar haha)

Best surprise of the day:
Bride: The most beautiful surprise was flowers from my husband while getting ready, along with a hand written, heartfelt note. The funniest surprise was walking into someone’s room later in the evening who I thought was from our wedding party, but turned out to be a large group of people having a retirement party!
Groom: If I don’t say that the best surprise was checking out my bride as I first laid eyes on her, I think I’ll get in trouble wink

Anything else you'd like to add: I feel like we need to give a special shout out to everyone that helped make the day so meaningful! It was so special to walk down the aisle knowing that together with my husband, family, and friends, we personalized every little detail of the day. The vendors we worked with were also fantastic, and the day went incredibly smoothly due to their hard work.  We are so grateful to everyone involved in making the day so memorable for us, and of course, for the love and support of our friends and family with whom this day would not have been possible.
